Now that you've got a pile of beautifully soft luxurious bamboo prefolds in your hand, it's time to put them to use.
I want to take a moment to reassure you that there is no wrong way to fold a prefold diaper.
If you can imagine it, then it can come true.
The intention is to fold the diaper so it fits your baby, fits into the cloth diaper cover or pocket, and that it absorbs pee. Don't worry about getting it perfect or lining up the corners, it's about practicality not perfection.
1. Classic Trifold
Taking the long edge of the prefold, fold the material into thirds. With our 2 layer prefolds you now have 6 layers of bamboo right where you need it, and 9 layers with the 3 layer prefolds. You now have a pad shaped material you can lay into the Tuck-Wrap-Go Cover or even place into a Nuggles Simplee or any other pocket cloth diaper.
2. Half Fold
If you nee a little extra length for a bigger child, or maybe you just don’t want the bulk of the trifold, you can take the short edge of the diaper and fold the prefold into half.
That’s it. Just add it to your diaper and life is good.
This is a great way to use a size 1 prefold with a bigger baby or a size 2 with a toddler/kid. This method of doubling up gives you 8-12 layers of absorbency depending on the prefold design. See the video below.
3. Boy Fold
This fold is a little more configuration that the above mentioned, but the intent is to offer as much absorbency as you need it where you need it. Boys tend to pee toward the front of the diaper leaving the back dry.
If you take your prefold long ways, fold it down a couple of inches and then in half you now have 8 layers of absorbency where boys pee when using a 2 layer insert compared to the 6 of a trifold.
This can be really helpful if you’re getting leaks, moisture, or other complaints despite the insert still being dry in the back.
4. Burrito Fold
Check out this great blog post from Maman Loups Den. She uses a Nuggles BambooLUXE Prefold and folds it into a nice package.
Burrito folds are great if you’re prefold is too big and your baby is too small. It’s a great way to fold the insert down into a more manageable shape.
Can I fold it on Baby?
