How Much Does Cloth Diapering Cost?

How much does it cost to cloth diaper?

It varies because you have options.

The cost varies amongst brands and within the different types of cloth diapers. For example, at Nuggles choosing the Tuck-Wrap-Go cover system is half the price compared to the Nuggles Simplee (a pocket-style AI2 diaper). These systems can further be customized by choosing the types of inserts and the number of diapers you need.

The same scenario applies for disposable diapers.

Some parents source cheap disposable diapers that cost $0.15 per diaper ($958/year), while other parents need to use fragrance free options that cost upwards of $0.40-$0.50 per diaper ($2,500/year).

The cost scenario for cloth diapering or disposable diapering is different for each family based on your needs. Consider your needs as a family and crunch the numbers reflective of your scenario. What disposable diapers would you be buying (and at what price point), and then compare to the different cloth diaper scenarios. We've provided a few examples below.

If you choose a cloth diaper system that requires a new diaper with each change, the cost will be more expensive, as shown to the left.

If you choose a cloth diaper system that you just replace the inserts with each change (and re-use the cover 2-3 times) then the cost is much less, as shown to the left.

The Cheapest way to Diaper

Using a system where just the insert is replaced with each diaper change is the cheapest way to cloth diaper. This includes using covers, all-in-two diapers and shells.

By choosing this system, like the Nuggles Tuck-Wrap-Go Cover, you can purchase one diaper and three inserts. Inserts are replaced with each change until the cover is soiled and /or begins to smell (usually every third change).

You get to choose the insert you want to use with this diaper system. You can use prefold diapers (like the Nuggles BambooLUXE Prefold). You can use flat diapers (including repurposed materials you can find for free). You can use fitted diapers (like the BambooLUXE Fitted Diaper). You can also use inserts

Another way to cloth diaper.

The cloth diaper cover system doesn't work for every family. If your care provider requires a new diaper with each change, or you just prefer pocket diapers, there is another option. Pocket cloth diapers are single-use cloth diapers. This means you put the insert into the diaper and then onto baby. When the diaper is soiled, you put it in the wash-bin for laundry day.

Note: The Nuggles Simplee can be reused as a diaper shell, allowing the fleece to dry between changes and the diaper can be re-used as long as clean and unsoiled. To do this: place the inserts or prefolds on top of the fleece and change them out when baby pees. This is an all-two-diaper. Learn more about the Nuggles Simplee here.

This system is more expensive because you are purchasing an entire diaper system for each change.

Other cloth diaper costs

Cloth diapering does mean more laundry. More laundry can mean more monthly costs for your family depending if you pay for water/sewer, coin-operated laundry, and other wash-related costs.

The best way to keep laundry related costs down is to use just what you need. Start with cool/warm water for washing, use the recommended amount of detergent, and avoid excessive rinses and wash treatments.

The biggest cost saving is to air dry your diapers by hanging them. Our cloth diaper covers and shells can dry in 2-4 hours!

Disposable diapering also has additional costs.
For some municipalities, disposable diapers means a larger garbage container which could cost upwards of $100 per year. Disposable diaper prices may fluctuate depending on sales, access to stores, and the changing sizes of the products.

Cloth Diaper Bonuses

1. Your stash can be re-used with other children. This one time cost can be the last time you ever buy diapers, including your next child.

2. Your stash can be re-sold. Cloth diaper resale market varies, but you can often recoup a conservative 25-50% of your diaper stash cost.

3. You don’t have to worry about running out, or a lack of supply. Cloth diapers will always be there, and Nuggles products are made from simple 2-3 layer products (excluding our fitted diaper) and could be easily handwashed, if needed
